Something New: Cydia Blocked in Several Countries

15 Feb 2011 | News |

iPad users from a couple of countries can’t access Cydia. So far, according to Steve Troughton-Smith Twitter posts, program’s servers are blocked from network in Ireland, the United Kingdom and China.

This program is a Debian packaging client used on iDevices that have been jailbroken. This includes the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

And it is now blocked by 3 carriers worldwide. According to the reports from users, China Unicom, Three Ireland and Three UK blocked program’s servers on their 3G networks. When people from these countries try to launch the app over 3G, they receive an error message that says the page can’t be loaded.

According to a user from the United Kingdom, Three UK blocks many sites on its network, and now it also blocks Cydia without allowing customers to unblock it with a pin.

At the same time the program is accessible via Wi-Fi. As you remember, jailbreaking is not honored by Apple, even though it is officially allowed in the USA now with a DMCA exception that was made last year.

There are rumors, according to which it’s Apple who asked to block hacker’s creation. But who knows for sure? And what other carriers plan to follow this strange operation next? Was it planned in advance? What do you think?

PS: some sources say, that Three blocked the app in Ireland and the UK by accident. The carrier promises to back it up soon in these two countries. But this doesn’t explain why Cydia has been blocked in China.

If you have this issue on Three UK or Three Ireland, you can simply call your carrier and ask it to remove the restriction. It should work, according to @Pablo_Diablo Twitter account.
