The iPad is selling very well in Japan, as you would expect in a country which thrives on new technology.
The medical profession, notoriously slow at keeping up to speed with such developments, have set aside their prejudices and use their iPhones for a variety of purposes. Jikei University Hospital has released its own health app for the iPhone and iPad which helps in diagnosing stroke symptoms. In partnership with Fujifilm Corps, it is developing a system whereby the new app can be utilized by other hospitals.
The iPad app was designed by Dr. Hirayuki Takao of Jikei’s neurology department. It can examine CT scans of the brain in 3-D form from different angles. The analysis made with the help of the app helps the hospital decide quickly if a patient needs surgery. Doctors can view the images of an aneurysm on their iPhones wherever they are and can offer advice after seeing the images of the aneurysms shape.
The app is beneficial to both doctors and patients. Japan has a shortage of doctors and this app will enable them to provide a more efficient, faster service to patients.
Other appsto assist the medical profession have also been developed in Japan. Doctors can send letters of referral to hospitals which have agreed to accept patients needing emergency treatment, and there is an app which is a guidebook for treatment which should be given in emergencies. Doctors who make house calls can use iPhones to access the patient’s medical database, and send photos direct to the patient’s file.
Undoubtedly other countries will follow Japan’s lead in this area.
