It’s been three months since the iPad has been launched into the market, so analytical companies are now ready to come up with a brief portrait of a typical user of the device as well as with a description of the things people want from their iPads.
Resolve Market Research has completed its study of user opinions and main tendencies of use of the iPad. Yahoo is also up with the updated version of its research of the Internet surfing habits of the device’s users. Here is the conclusion: many people say that the iPad is just an expensive toy, the device is exceptionally popular among women and new customers of Apple, and is used in more ways than it was originally supposed to.
The iPad is definitely not affecting the sales of e-readers in a positive way, Resolve claims. As the survey shows, 49% of people using the iPad are not going to buy an e-reader. What was less expected is the fact that 38% of the iPad users say they don’t need a new portable gaming device now. 32% enjoy using the iPad instead of a laptop or a netbook and, therefore, are not planning on buying any.
The iPad also seems to be doing a great job bringing Apple some new customers: according to the data obtained by Resolve, 37% of the current iPad users have never owned any other Apple device before.
Apple will still have to work some in order to make everyone see the full utility of the iPad. 55% of the people owning or planning on owning the iPad admit that they regard it as just an expensive toy. 33% percent think that the iPad is a real breakthrough device and 28% say that it also benefits productivity.
The people looking forward to buying the iPad say they need it because it’s a great portable entertainment device (58 %), because it’s convenient (40%) and because of its brand (28%). 42% want it also because it’s cool. The people who don’t want to buy the iPad, say it’s because they don’t see a need for it (54%) and because it’s too expensive (46%).
Yahoo’s version of the survey shows that these days the iPad is used by women in 39% of cases – compared to 36% at launch.
The iPad is used to surf different Yahoo sites these days as well. The users of the first iPads were mostly hanging out at Flickr, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo News and Yahoo Sports, while now 28% growth in the size of the iPad crowd has been registered at Yahoo Groups. Yahoo Shopping and Yahoo Travel have got 25% and 22% more popular among the iPad users correspondingly.
The iPad is most popular among 35-44-year-old people (28%), then come 21-29 year olds (19%), who are followed by 45-54 year olds (17%).
Demographic analysis of international users has returned the results similar to those in US customer survey. It should be pointed out, however, that customers from US are 3-4 times less interested in technology than the iPad users in Britain, Australia and Germany.
Since the iPad is a fairly new product, it’s no surprise that far not everyone has already figured out what to use it for. However, it’s obvious that’s is steadily turning into a major computing option for people and, therefore, can affect sales of portable gaming devices, e-readers and even netbooks significantly.
