Lyon County School has improved the way principals evaluate their teachers with a new program that relies on the iPad.

Lyon County School District policy requires principals to spend at least an hour a day in classrooms to observe and evaluate the teaching methods of their teachers.

The iPad program gives the principals immediate rating of the evaluation since the evaluation form can be immediately uploaded through the iPad for the teacher’s viewing.

However, one parent of the Lyon student is against this program saying it is an improper use of funds of the school. Leila Veil said her daughter was not allowed to take home textbooks because of their limited number, and she said the school should be spending money for student materials and not on gadgets for teachers and principals.

Lommori said the money spent on the iPads came from $290,020 funds awarded to the school as Title II A for the improvement of teacher and administrator quality. $35,000 of this sum was spent on the Apple devices, quite a big price.  He also made clear that the Title II A is specifically allocated for the professional development of teachers and principals, and not for classroom supplies.

Lommori said the principals originally used papers as evaluation forms, but that method was time consuming and it was expensive to purchase those forms. Lommori also said that using the iPad in the new program was very beneficial and time saving since the principals can easily login to the system and provide their feedbacks to the teachers. There is no need for them to go back to the office and use a power point presentation.

“The principal is the instructional leader with the teacher, and this is a tool to do that,” he said. “The School Improvement Plan gives guidance to the principals and teachers and developing a template like this one directly benefits students in the classroom.”

Superintendent Caroline McIntosh said the District is looking for options that use technology, and that technology is an important factor in hiring teachers.

She also added that we live in the 21st century and teachers should make sure students understand the future and technology. Some of the principals have received and are using their iPads in schools while others are still waiting for their orders to arrive.
