Strategy Analytics Research firm reported on worldwide tablet shipments during the fourth quarter of 2011. New statistics show that Apple’s iPad is still the top tablet for many of us, with Android’s share growing because of a newcomer to the scene.
While Android Operating System increased the number of shipments, with thanks mainly to a bump from holiday sales of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet computer, Apple’s iPad maintained an incredible 58% share of tablet shipments.
Apple’s iPad discovered 15.4 million devices shipped throughout the fourth quarter of 2011, with Android taking second place with 10.5 million shipments…
The main reason for Android’s change in the fate is being related to the release of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet computer, despite the fact that Apple’s CEO Tim Cook recently mentioned that he felt the newcomer hadn’t made an impact on the iPad’s sales.
In comparison to the same time of 2010, the iPad saw a fall in the share of tablet shipments, with Android seeing progress. While really worth noting, the statistic doesn’t always mean a swing is on the card.
Worldwide tablet shipments reached an all-time high of 26.8 million devices in the fourth quarter of 2011, surging 150% from 10.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2010,” said Peter King, director at Strategy Analytics.
“Interest in tablet computers among consumer, business and education users continues to be strong. Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads around the world and maintained its strong market leadership with 58% share in the last quarter of 2011. Apple shrugged off the much-hyped threat from entry-level Android models this quarter”.
Strategy Analytics’ numbers have come under analysis before due to the fact they are based on shipments instead of actual sales. While we don’t know if Android tablet computers are sitting un-sold on store shelves, we definitely know that Apple is now selling iPads hand over fist.
