iPad from Russia: Soviet Tablets Attack

A new lineup of tablet computers merged with PC has been unveiled by Russia-based Rover Computers this week. Each of the new devices brags unique specs and is either Windows CE- or Android-based.

The guy up front is 5 RoverPad Go G50 a device using Android 1.5 and featuring a Marvell PXA303 processor, 128 Megabytes of RAM and 2 Gigabytes of disc space, all under a WVGA touchscreen. Internet can be accessed via WiFi or 3G. G50 also supports GPS and comes with a microSD slot and a USB port. Practically the same plus Bluetooth and Ethernet connectivity with an optional GPS on Android 1.6 is offered by RoverPad Go G72 the 7 version of the abovementioned device.

RoverPad 3WG70 is the RockChip 2808 powered tablet with the same 128 Megabytes of RAM and 2 Gigabyte capacity. This Android 1.5 based device with WiFi module, USB port, and microSD slot also offers a webcam to complement the whole thing.

The last but not least Android-based device in the new line is the 7 TegA W70 powered by NVIDIA Tegra the one that Rover president Sergei Shunyaev lovingly referred to as the “iPad for Soviets“. This tablet runs Android 2.1 and comes with WiFi and 3G modules, HDMI out, 512 Megabytes of RAM and a 4 Gigabyte flash drive.

But where’s the promised Windows CE based device? Here it comes: give it up for RoverPad Air G70 running on a 667MHz Samsung ARM11 CPU. The technical characteristics are as follows: 256 Megabytes of RAM, 4 gigabytes of flash disc space, WVGA screen and FM transmitter and 3Mpx cam for users’ entertainment. WiFi and 3G are available as options.

According to local media forecasts, Rover will start shipping the Soviet iPads in October. The cheapest tablet will cost around 10,000 rubles, which equals to app. $323.
