iPad Apps for Visual Learners

Some of us are audio learners, and learn by listening, and some of us are visual learners who need pictures to link new concepts to. The Adobe Ideas1.0 app for the iPad is free, and it enables users to sketch. Photos can be imported from users’ Photo gallery and there are different colours and brush sizes to choose from.
The app supports layers, so users can build up different parts of an image to make a whole. When the sketch is complete, it can be uploaded as a PDF file and imported to Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop for enhancement. It’s simple, powerful and what’s more, it’s free.
The Penultimate app from Cocoa Box Design will set you back $1.99, and this will allow you to take notes by hand or make sketches in a range of colours, on a background that looks like paper. It enables the user to group notes in different notebooks, share them with friends, or export them to PDF files. It has a nifty algorithm which recognizes when you rest your hand on the screen, so you don’t leave a mark.

Note Taker HD from Software Garden costs $4.99. The guy behind it is Dan Bricklin who developed the first spreadsheet for the computer, 30 years ago. Remember VisiCalc? This app is his baby, and it allows users to write capital letters on the screen and then it sizes them down and converts them into words and sentences. It could be good for children who are learning to write or for dyslexics.
Finally there’s the Use Your Handwriting Gold app, from Gee Whiz Stuff, going for a mere 99 cents. This app is for using calligraphy pens to write notes, and then organize them into lists.
You can use your index finger to write or you can buy a stylus such as the Pogo Stylus, which retails at $14.95. This reproduces the electrical properties in your finger, but you may feel more comfortable writing with one. You can make your own stylus, using sellotape, some aluminium foil and a pen, which is the cheaper option.
You may not actually need one of these apps, but they’re fun – and one of them is free!
