In the recent conference call discussing the record-smashing financial results, Cupertino company said that its cloud syncing service, Apple iCloud, now has 85 million users signed up.

iCloud first showed along with the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 as a free-of-charge alternative to Apple’s old MobileMe service, as well as its growth during the last three months has apparently been explosive; over the same period, iCloud signups exceeded unit sales of iPods, Macs, iPhones, and iPads put together.

Apple’s income for every quarter has definitely raised a few eyebrows now, with the company reporting big sales, huge profits and just all around awesomeness. If you are an Apple investor, then you are most likely very happy at the moment.

A lot of interesting information came out of the earnings call, however, one that may not be getting so much attention is the news that there’re today 85 million iCloud users, which makes it clear just why Apple needed that new data center after all.

We believe Apple wishes it was charging them the same $99 it charged for MobileMe

Tim Cook, new Apple CEO, claimed that iCloud is not only a replacement for the poor MobileMe, but rather the company wants and expects it to be its technique for the coming ten years. Read into that what you will, but it is pretty sure Apple’s thinking continuing to move forward will involve the internet a lot.

Does that probably translate to iPads and iPhones with less storage compared to what they pack today? We’ve heard gossips suggesting just that for quite a while now.

At the time MobileMe was replaced by iCloud this summer, additionally, it dropped the $99 selling price, with Apple preferring to get as many people utilizing the service as they can. If the company’s attempts over the next decade all revolve around its buyers being tied into its own cloud services, then that might turn out to be quite a smart move on Apple’s part.

It really seems like something Apple would do, doesn’t it?
