How to Use RSS on the iPad
30 Dec 2010 | Advice | LentLilly on Google+
Frankly speaking there are lots of terms related to the Internet which I don’t know. Yeah, it’s a shame. However I would like to make amends and I am starting right now. The first thing I would like to pinpoint attention upon is RSS.
Do you know what it is and how it should be used on your tablet? Let’s see.
RSS is
First of all RSS is an abbreviation which means Really Simple Syndication.
Well, the first two words are really simple but not the third one! Nevertheless, all together they mean a broadcast system that’s all, that’s how you can transmit information via the Internet.
The iPads House has an RSS feed (that is how it is called) you can see its orange icon on our home page and it updates all the information on our website for the whole world to see what is new.
If you click the RSS icon you will see all the articles sorted in one place and as a matter of fact your website and any website can boast of an RSS feed. All because it is really convenient.
I was captivated when I got to this point but then the charm melted away. Ok, we now know the theory but how on Earth should we use it?
Using RSS in Real Life
First of all one should subscribe to RSS feed which means you will receive the newest information of any website you subscribed to just like you get periodicals and watch your favorite series on Saturday evening.
But if now you are looking at your screen and don’t know HOW to subscribe please note that you need an RSS Reader for it.
The access to the information that is carefully sorted is carried out through this Reader open it and see the latest information from numerous sources. The RSS reader keeps the feeds that appear and organizes them to make your interaction with the web simpler and save you time.
If you haven’t yet got an idea what RSS does there follows a nice example.
My day starts with visiting my favorite websites and blogs, I switch between them and read the updates, which means that I have to open lots of pages and then search for what’s new.
The RSS Reader does it for me. It searches for the latest information on the websites that I subscribed to, piles all the feeds together, organizes them and when I wake up and open it I have all the feeds in front of me with not a single one being missed. It saves me time and makes me think that the further the progress goes the lazier we become.
RSS App for iPad
We bet you already like it but probably wonder if it will work for the iPad.
Yes, it will!
Naturally you will need some RSS Readers or News Reader which is an RSS application for iPad. You will see how convenient it is to look through all the feeds on the iPad’s beautiful screen. Moreover you will be able to share everything you consider to be interesting right via your Twitter, email, Facebook, ReadItLater and more.
Over and above using RSS on your iPad I also can leave marks: read, unread, shared, starred, keep unread, etc.
It is possible to save images on your iPad to the Photo Library and choose Show all/new items.
So, there you go. I bet your eyes are sparkling and all you can think of is an RSS Reader and perhaps a manual on how to use it. But with the iPads House writing team you don’t need a manual everything you need is here, near at hand.
Free and Paid RSS Readers for iPad
Like you might guess (taking into account your previous experience with software) there are free and paid RSS Readers, for example, the Google RSS Reader, Feeddler, NewzCrawler, Omea Reader, Blog Navigator and many others.
We would like to go into the Google RSS Reader at large because this RSS Reader appears to be the most popular and in some respects most useful one in the whole brotherhood.
Google RSS Reader
You will need a free Google account in the first place. As I already have one I went from there to http://reader.google.com.
While I was thinking and analyzing the alleged ways how RSS can boost business activity I found myself staring at a blank screen. Thanks to the steel nerves of mine I didn’t panic and found Add a Subscription? line and clicked it to see a pop-up window requiring some information called feed address.
I never stop half-way, for this reason I started to frantically search for this address I’ve never heard of.
It turned out to be very simple. At the beginning of the article I mentioned an orange icon used by websites for RSS so I clicked it on one of my favorite websites. It was then that it questioned me if I would like to have it added to my Google Reader. Naturally I opted for Yes and subsequently after going to my Google account saw that it was really added to it.
If Your Favorite Site Doesn’t Have RSS Button
However sometimes there is no heaven-sent RSS button and you might feel betrayed by us please do not there is always a way out. Check the url in the address bar and try to enter /feed after the name of the website there (see http://www.ipadshouse.com/feed) and things will work out.
That’s it. Are there any feeds already? You will appreciate not only the fact that all the latest updates are in one place but also that you will be able to read them directly from your RSS Reader or visit the website by the provided link.
MobileRSS for iPad
There are lots of RSS Readers for the iPad as well. Let’s find out more about MobileRSS (well, I checked some Readers and liked this one most of all).
Of course it doesn’t mean that it is the only one you should try.
Would you grudge $4.99 for an RSS Reader for iPad? I wouldn’t.
As soon as you have this iPad application on your tablet it will presto! request the information of your Google reader account and when you are finished filling it in all the feeds you’ve been collecting will emerge.
It is also possible to combine business with iPad and pleasure that is Google and RSS through Google Alerts. For those who don’t know what it is there follow an explanation: instead of egosurfing and spending time indulging my vanity I can use Google Alerts to receive updates about all the cases of my name mention on the Internet transmitted right to your iPad through the RSS Reader.
To sum it up and save your time we suggest you should use RSS because it is probably the best way to organize all the useful information taken from dozens of websites. We know you will like the way the information looks like on your tablet.
