E-books have greatly evolved from simple black-and-white version to the new released e-books that include videos, to the extent of confusing the publishers on what to call them.
Hachette Book Group decided to release its version of e-book by David Baldacci calling it an enriched book. Penguin Group released an amplified version of a novel by Ken Follett. Simon & Schuster introduced an enhanced e-book version of Nixonland by Rick Perlstein.
The new generation of e-books also known as multimedia books use videos that are integrated with text giving the users of the iPad the delight of reading the book and watching the video at the same time.
The iPad has inspired different publishers to create their own version of multimedia books for iPad. The concept was originally released by Vook in 2009, but due to the success of the app, many companies have followed the lead.
Simon & Schuster published Nixonland, a bestseller in 2008 the first e-book published in hardcover with 896 pages and 27 videos throughout the e-book. Videos include an interview with Mr. Perlstein, conducted by Bob Schieffer, the chief Washington correspondent for CBS News.
Each video inserted in the page can be played by tapping the iPad. The user can resume reading by pausing the video. The purpose is to incorporate the video in the story of the book in a natural way.
The first batch of e-books was experimental and unpolished but those developed in time. Authors can produce e-books in multimedia.
Chief executive of Vook Brad Inman, said the company is working with 25 publishers to create multimedia books. The iPad brought this to life, he said. Everyone knows now that they’ve got to put their toe in this water.
Books with multimedia are higher in price. An enhanced Nixonland costs $15.99 in iBookstore and Amazon Kindle store, compared to the black-and-white e-book that costs less than $14.99.
