Foxconn Want to Start Manufacture iPads in Brazil

Foxconn has decided to begin manufacture of iPads in Brazil, as the region has approved specific tax bonuses made to aid Apple’s popular tablet. The Brazilian government can give tax breaks to Foxconn for the manufacture of tablets specific as weighing under 750 grams and lacking key boards. The taxes that will be impacted are the Excise Tax (IPI), Social Contribution Tax (PIS), and Federal Contribution Tax (COFINS).

The truth is, getting Foxconn’s Brazilian factory to begin producing iPads is a big deal for both Apple and Apple followers in South America – it removes the requirement for costly important taxes that can sometimes double the cost of the tablet…

Here’s the relevant chunk, reported by Brazilian newspaper Folha:

“Brazil’s Inter-Ministerial Decree 34, which allows for a reduction or exemption from taxes for certain tablet computers, was signed on Monday and published in the country’s “Official Gazette” on Wednesday, clearing the way for Chinese manufacturer Foxconn to begin production of Apple’s iPad.

Specifically, the decree states that companies investing in the research and development of keyboardless touchscreen tablets weighing less than 750 grams qualify for IPI (Excise Tax), PIS (Social Contribution Tax) and COFINS (Federal Contribution Tax) incentives. Also included under the decree are accessories, cables, power supplies and manuals associated with tablet computers.”

The $12 billion deal to take Apple manufacturing iPads in Brazil hit some roadblocks in 2011. From Foxconn’s end, it was the absurd paperwork and high tax rates of iPad in Brazil that held up production. From the Brazilian government’s end, Foxconn was simply stressful insane tax breaks.

iPad in Brazil production was required to kick off in July 2011, but these differences of opinion held it back. With the passing of these new bonuses, it follows that Foxconn’s Brazilian plant should start pumping out Apple iPad right away.
