Most iPad games on the market have been designed with the iPhone in mind and so do not make full use of the iPads bigger screen. However, the Ultimate Alphabet game, developed by Toytek, is a visual crossword’ according to its creators. This game is based on a book by Mike Wilks, an artist, who illustrated all the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Each of the original illustrations was filled with items and animals that began with the letter being illustrated. This is the idea behind the new iPad game.

How do you play? You zoom in and scroll around the image, double-tapping on an item and typing in its name. There are 362 words for the letter’A', so it will take some time to complete the game. You do it slowly, a letter at a time.

There are cryptic crossword clues to help you, set by a professional crossword compiler, but don’t worry if you are no good at crosswords, there are other clues, such as jumbled words, which will help. As you go through the game you are awarded virtual prizes to motivate you to continue playing and you can see how well you are doing in comparison with your friends, as it ties in to the OpenFeint connected community.

The Ultimate Alphabet is free to download, and you can play for free on the letter A’ but after that you have to pay. For example the letter B costs just under 5 pounds sterling, and B and d together will cost a pound more. Of course, it should take quite some time to complete each letter, and it does use the iPad screen. Give the letter A a go and see what you think.
