The hot news of the day is that councilor Sarah Russell’ cancelled her order for an iPad after a ruthless public reaction over tax expenditure. As we reported before, Leicester City Council decided to spend taxpayer money on iPads for 54 its elected representatives.

The reason for buying such pricey Apple’s toys was that they wanted to stop councilors from spending extra money on printing council paper. Their justification for buying an over-priced Apple’s iPad seemed to be strange. It was double weird that is why Leicester City Council was happy to spend whopping 699 pounds sterling, especially when the climate is suffering from a harsh recession.

Fair enough, that this order was cancelled on the time. According to This Is Leicester, Labour Cabinet member Sarah Russell had changed her mind the very last moment, and decided to cancel her order for iPads. Russell did this after one Liberal Democrat accepted delivery and two Conservative councillors. Her decision was accurate and timely definitely; she might have cancelled her order after listening or seeing the unanimous public reaction on local forums.

Later Sarah Russell explained the reason of cancelling and gave a statement to the newspaper saying that: It may have improved the way that we work as councillors but I’ve got to be aware of how it appears to taxpayers. I’ve asked the IT department to look at more cost-effective ways of helping councillors to work efficiently.
