eBay is asking Apple to create a model that allows users of the iPad and the iPhone to donate to charity using a simple application.
Carrie Bienkowski, Europe-wide head of charity and sustainability at eBay said, eBay is using the Give at Checkout feature which allows users to donate to charity when they buy goods. eBay is asking Apple to do the same to its iPad and iPhone users.
Apple is currently restricting charity donations using its payment system. “If Apple let us use its payments system for donations, it could be the first step towards letting other charities take donations through its system,” Bienkowski said.
According to Bienkowski, eBay is currently speaking to Apple in the US to allow charities to create their own applications that allowed the users to donate to charities using the Apple payments system.
Users of the iPad and the iPhone can currently download apps that can be used to buy items from the retailers. Payments sent to retailers through Apple’s payment center are subject to fees.
Bienkowski said that allowing the use of Give at Checkout feature that is currently used by eBay will give the users the choice to donate to charities. The Give at Checkout has so far gathered £2m for UK charities in 2009, of which £6m has been raised from the eBay site.
eBay is also asking other retailers including Argos and John Lewis to adopt the application when they sell their products online.
