Walt Disney Company confirmed Wednesday that it had bought Tapulous, the company that created music-based games for the iPhone, iPad, and iPad touch.

Companies are seeing business in the App store as very lucrative, having five billion downloads so far. This is not the first time a big company buys  start-ups that have track records in the market. Other big companies like IAC/InterActiveCorp and Amazon.com were first to enter the business.

Bart Decrem, chief executive and co-founder of Tapulous said, We have been very successful on the iPhone. He also added that the company foresees success in a partnership with Disney, who shares the same vision of the future and the iPhone as a mobile platform.

Tapulous has released Tap Tap Revenge, a game that is patterned after popular music rhythm games like Rock Band, challenges players to keep up with colored orbs as they zoom past to the beat of the music. The game earned a lot of downloads, climbing the charts in the Apple store.

The success inspired the company to release games with tunes from popular singers: Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga for $3.99.

President of Disney Interactive Media Group Steve Wadsworth, said Tapulous would continue to focus on music rhythm games.

Disney’s acquisition of Tapulous could mean power into the mobile and social game industry. The company had recently ventured in Playdom, an online game company that makes popular games for the iPhone and Facebook, including the game Mobsters.

Disney has already had some success with phone apps, with a puzzle game called Jelly Car 2 and a game with Alice in Wonderland theme.
