Apple Is the Third Largest Mobile Phone Maker in the World

03 Feb 2012 | News |

Apple managed to push past some well-known phone makers as LG and ZTE thanks to its record sales of the popular iPhone. Now the California-based company is the world’s third biggest handset vendor, IDC reports.

This week IDC has presented the results of its Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker for the December quarter. According to this report, there is a 6.1 percent boost in the market from the same period of the last year.

Figures and Apple’s Contribution

The market intelligence company estimates over 400 million worldwide shipments which surpass the expert’s expectations of 4.4 percent increase for that quarter.

Still, this growth is lower than the 3rd quarter of 2011. The growth was 9.3 percent during that period.

Kevin Restivo, IDC analyst, says that such figures are strangely low, because of the “weaker macroeconomic conditions” in many countries across the globe.

Thanks to its new iPhone 4S sales Apple helped the market grow in the fourth quarter since this iDevice was shipped in the last quarter of 2011. Still, according to Restivo, “Overall market growth fell to its lowest point since the third quarter of 2009.” It was in 3Q09 when the world’s economic recession was blooming in its fullest.
