Apple is Still the Leading Smartphone Manufacturer in the World

Samsung might have eclipsed Apple as being the leading smartphone manufacturer in the world, but in the U.S.A, the iPhone remains to be the hardware leader on the market.

Apple the top smartphone manufacturer

According to the recent reports, Apple’s 37-million-iPhone quarter make it the leading smartphone manufacturer in the world because of volume. We can compare that to Samsung, who recently held the position, who apparently shipped 35 million smartphones in that time.

Tim Cook claims the iPhone’s success last quarter is the result of combining things such as the launch of the iPhone 4S, a more strong iPhone family (3GS, 4, 4S), and certainly the holidays. It will be interesting to see what Apple does in this new quarter when two of those factors become unimportant.

Nielsen, a global advertising and marketing research company located in NY, reported that while Apple makes up 28% of the smartphone market in America, when it comes to mobile operating systems, Google’s Android continues to be on top with 43% of market share. Google’s piece increased from 39 % during the same time in 2010.

Apple shipped no more than 4.2% of smartphone devices in the quarter ending on September, but accounted for some 52% of smartphone income. At least, that is where Mike Walkley, Canaccord Genuity analyst, pegs the numbers, stating that of the 8 main cellular providers in the world, Apple’s iPhones lead to better than half of their income by device. Nevertheless, in the last quarter Apple made up 57% of income.

In comparison, Samsung makes up about 29% of profits among smartphone sellers, that has climbed from 18% the quarter prior. HTC’s share of the revenue is 9%, with Research In Motion making up 7% and Nokia for 4%.

Still Apple is the leading smartphone manufacturer in the world. While Apple is hitting Samsung hard in the court and still commands a big piece of the market, the numbers advise Apple to keep on its toes as Android and Samsung become even bigger forces on the market.
