Since the original iPhone was launch, Apple has been hiding the actual tech specs of the device from consumers. The company never made an effort to publish or even give a clue on what’s going on inside the iPhone: speed of its processor and amount of RAM. What Apple is doing is push the overall functionality of the device to the consumer.
However, technically conscious consumers are eager to know the capabilities of the device that they are using or will be using. The original iPhone and iPhone 3G have 128MB of RAM. iPhone 3G has been upgraded to 256MB of RAM like of the iPad’s. The limited memory is preventing these devices from supporting iOS 4 that features multi-tasking.
Meanwhile, Apple officially announced the upgraded capacity of the iPhone 4 having a total of 512MB of RAM, doubling the size of the RAM of the 3GS and iPad. The confirmation was made in one of the WWDC sessions last week. The announcement proved the analysis of the iPhone that leaked in the internet, wrong. The device only carried 256MB of RAM. Advanced Performance Optimization on iPhone OS, pt 2 is now available for registered Apple developers.
The added RAM will make a lot of difference to the experience of the users as the new upgrade gives the iPhone 4 the multi-tasking capability, and ability to run the iMovie App. These are the features that are not currently supported by 3GS and the iPad due to its inferior processor.
