10 Most Impressive Video Performances on iDevices

05 Dec 2010 | iPad Movies |

If you followed our updates concerning musical apps for iPad you should have noticed that such a wide selection of features that is suggested makes it possible to write and compose songs, record albums and edit pieces of any degree of complexity using just one thing – your iDevice.

Probably, it occurred to Damon Albarn, Gorillaz frontman, as well because he is getting ready with an album that will be created solely with the help of the iPad tablet.

It might sound alluring to both amateurs and professionals and while you are sleeping on it before making any serious steps check out 10 most impressive videos with the musicians and singers performing with the iPads, iPhones and iPods touch.

Yoari & iBand

1 Yoari & iBand: if only Beyonce knew how much money she could have saved on all the musical equipment she would have definitely chosen to work with iDevices instead just like a young Korean pop-star Yoari and her band. The song sounds great and one can hardly tell the difference between the original and this pro-Apple version. My only concern is that when performing on the stage the artists would look weird with tablets. But who knows, maybe in some years musical instruments will be the ones to get interrogative looks: What’s that, man? A guitar? Still, I hope it won’t come to this!

Stanford's mobile phone orchestra

2. Stanford’s mobile phone orchestra: Stanford University can boast of its new experimental ensemble, the so-called MoPhO. The guys there play their iPhones and thus create unusual melodies and I must admit I’ve never heard anything similar before. The associate professor in charge of this ensemble also developed an iPhone app Ocarina which basically is a flute you can play. All you do is blowing into the microphone and pressing holes to create beautiful melodies. What impressed me most was the opportunity to see the globe with locations marked where people recently played this app and listen to what they played that’s globalization for sure.

The Mentalists

3. The Mentalists: This video shows how iPhones, iPods, musical apps and practice can make you a YouTube star this quartet performed Kids by MGMT using only iDevices and performed it brilliantly! Now those who often have enough spare time can hit it as big as The Mentalists. It is nice for everyone, especially for those who start from scratch the apps are simple and intuitive, you will need just a couple of days of practice and it might turn out that you have the potential to make a name for yourself in this industry.

The iPad orchestra

4. The iPad orchestra: The iPad orchestra literally means an orchestra, a pocketable orchestra as you can see. If your fellow-friend finds out he forgot or lost his contrabass and the concert is to commence in 5 minutes then things really look blue unless he has an iPad or you can lend him one. This video is a nice proof of the promising future that is so real for digital music that is born and goes all its way with devices so different from the regular musical instruments. These four people make a real orchestra and play good music – it is something that should make us broaden our horizons in terms of the way of looking at things.

Atomic Tom

5. Atomic Tom: I like this video most of all! Of course, it will look pretentious if you put on nice clothes and record you song with nice light, corresponding interior and atmosphere but these guys are amazing. They are performing on a New York subway, with lots of noises and other people around. And you know what? These people start singing along! I am thrilled and undoubtedly vote for them. Another advantage of digital music is as follows: if you don’t have a place to hold rehearsals you can go to subway for practice and inspiration see how Atomic Tom did it.

iBand

6. iBand: iBand is the next to carry the flag of the music bands performing with the iDevices. Marina, Roger and Seb (you can see their hands in this video) play their Apple devices and suggest their composition Life is greater than the internet which sounds a bit mocking to me in this context. The only thing I would wish for is seeing the faces of the performers, I do hope we are not stepping into an era of video-clips featuring hands only.  But he song is really beautiful, enjoy!

AppleGirl

7. Applegirl: YouTube has also promoted Applegirl002 whom you might know as Kim Yeo-hee. The way she arranged and used all the four iPhones makes me think that guys who offered her a record contract after having seen this video were absolutely right. This is a fascinating interpretation of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face song. I also reckon Kim Yeo-hee could patent her iPhone setup to top it all. iDevices actually can be a passport for everyone who don’t know how to start but are sure that they will rock.

iPad band

8. iPad band: As I have already mentioned above, some musicians start reeducating and keeping one iPad instead of a ton of musical instruments at home. This is the case with Geoff Kaiser who created an amazing piece of music by editing various pieces into one and using the split-screen effect. Thus we see that one can easily do with just one device to show great talent and potential. I wish there were more people like Geoff Kaiser the more good music we will have.

Lang Lang

9. Lang Lang: This was destined to happen sooner or later. If we used to talk about bands that perform on iDevices then now things will change. Just come to think of it there is a huge stage with all the people making the real orchestra, a director and a world-known pianist starts playing his iPad instead of the piano. Lang Lang played Flight of the Bumblebee on the tablet while the orchestra listened to him silently. What do you think the public reaction was? Check it out!

Gary Go 2

10. Gary Go: If you haven’t heard of Gary Go then you don’t follow the news of the music world, I bet. The video features him playing his iPhone and singing a beautiful song on the stage. He scored a knockout with his giant London venue Wembley and since then has been known to write his songs on the iDevice and perform them just as you can see in this video with an iPhone in his hand. It seems that we are going to live through a revolution in the world of music, composing, editing, performing, recording, releasing. Apple afforded grounds for everyone to learn, play and compose music with its genius produce.
